Style or Substance? WARNING: LONG POST.
Have you ever felt frustrated that no guy ever seems to notice your existence? I know I have, on quite a few occasions. It's like they'll all be fawning over some other girl instead, and you'll be left in the dust wishing that you could look a little more like her.
To be completely honest (I'm not flattering myself, I swear I'm not), I'm perfectly aware that what I lack in style I more than make up for in substance. And hey, I have some style. At least I know how to avoid looking like a complete fashion disaster when I go out. But I've noticed a general trend in the girls that guys seem to gravitate towards:
They usually have long hair.
I know, I have long-ish hair too, but it's just because I got sick of having short hair that didn't even suit me in the first place. Plus, long hair makes me look a little more mature instead of cutesy, which I really wanna avoid. But look around - almost every girl who has an other half (I'm not saying 'better', because it's not always true) has long hair. And while I'm on the topic of hair, let me make another statement.
They all have fringes that cover their foreheads.
Don't believe me? Take a good look. Only at local girls, mind you! I'm not being discriminatory, it's just that fringes are a must in our society; Has anyone noticed that? Anyone without a decent fringe (like me) is pretty much a social outcast. Please don't try to tell me that my fringe is fine, that there's nothing wrong with it. I'm aware that it sucks, which is why I've opted to keep a long side fringe instead. Plus, I've actually come to terms with my huge forehead. :) But back to topic : These girls all have forehead-covering fringes. Why, is what I want to ask. Why is it so important in Singapore's society to have a fringe? I mean, look at America, for example! The girls over there don't need fringes at all! Or is it some Asian thing that I'm missing out on? Hell, even our guys have fringes! And don't blame Justin Bieber for this, people, because those fringes were in way before he even stepped onto the scene.
They wear short shorts and skirts pretty much all the time.
You will not see them in jeans. Ever. When they go out, they're always wearing shorts or skirts. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this, but seriously. What's the deal? If it's sex appeal, I think I'll die laughing right here and now. I know Singapore is hot (hello, I live here) but there's nothing wrong with wearing jeans every once in a while. Why am I saying this? Simple - I'm the jeans-and-T-shirt kind of girl. And I feel like a nun when I wear jeans out because of all the public displaying of flesh. The bar has been raised so high that it feels as though I'll need to show off just as much flesh if I want a guy to even look at me. Man, this is annoying. Don't get me wrong though, I like wearing shorts, and I'm getting nicely acquainted with wearing skirts out. But how much leg do I have to show before a guy decides to turn his head my way? This shows exactly how shallow our society has become. So sad. :(
Makeup, Makeup, Makeup.
From eyeliner to mascara to foundation, those girls have tried it all. And they wear it all, too. Whatever happened to going au naturale?? I'm not talking about nude makeup; I'm saying go with zero makeup. Does this sound foreign? I mean, do guys actually kiss those foundation-covered cheeks? Wouldn't they be kissing the makeup instead of the real deal, then? Eew. Plus, some girls really go all-out with the makeup, so much that it doesn't look nice anymore. A little bit is fine (I'm very partial towards eyeliner, myself) but this is way too much, and defeats the original purpose of makeup, which is to enhance your looks instead of covering them up. Do guys go for natural beauty with all its flaws, or the mask that is created instead? I'm not opposed to any of these points, but I think it's sad how these points have completely taken over the rules of teenage courtship. It's like, to get a guy to acknowledge my existence, I have to do steps A to Z. And those of you who know me know that I'm so not like that.If I have to change myself so much for a guy, he's obviously not worth my time.
You know, if I could choose how I want my future boyfriend to be, I'd probably list these, to start off:
Looks don't matter.
Not really, at least. Average looks are good enough for me, and anything above average is a bonus. :)
He must love me for who I am.
Like I said earlier, if I have to change myself so much for him, then forget it. If they're good changes, fine, but if I can't be ME around him, I'll be steering him towards my door. Out!
When I say love, I mean love.
I'd better mean more than just a brief fling or whatever. No cheating. Ever. I can honestly say that if I catch my (future) guy cheating on me, I'd break up with him immediately. Cheating is one thing that I absolutely refuse to stand for. After all, if you cheat on someone it means that you just don't love that person enough, doesn't it? And when I love, I will give all of me. If he can't love me completely, too bad. These are three of the most important points for me. Haha, I probably sound really demanding! But really, this is how I feel. In love, shouldn't it be a give-and-take thing? So I take from him... And I give him just as much, if not even more. I don't have to be his first love, but if he's more experienced than me I'll just hope for him to be patient enough to take things easy, cos I'm really shy when it comes to love.
I may not look like much, but I know I'll be one hell of a catch for my right guy! And you know what? I know quite a few girls who'll be one hell of a catch for guys who are lucky enough to win their love. (Yes, Xinyi, I'm talking about you! XD)
So, guys, wake up already! Style over substance is so overrated. Pfft.
