SIP is coming up.
In case you don't know what SIP means, it's the Student Internship Programme that all seniors have to go for. Which means that I'll be going for this programme (it's 6 months long for our course) next semester. And I'm FREAKING OUT.

For most of us, the SIP will be there for us to figure out what we really want to do for a career after we graduate (that is, most of us will be continuing our studies first, but you get what I mean). And well, I'm struggling with the choices I'll need to make.

We were given a form to fill in and hand in next Monday, and this form has 10 media areas that we need to look at and decide which kind we prefer.

- TV Production
- Video Production
- Radio Programming/Production
- Radio Journalism
- Print Journalism
- Multimedia
- Web Design
- Marketing and Promotions
- Public Relations/Corporate Communications
- Events Management

Just by looking at this I can already eliminate about half of the options. I'd rather die than do multimedia and web design.

- TV Production
- Video Production
- Radio Programming/Production
- Radio Journalism
- Print Journalism
- Multimedia
- Web Design
- Marketing and Promotions
- Public Relations/Corporate Communications
- Events Management

Plus I'm absolutely hopeless at marketing and events management and PR and all that stuff. I can do it and I can learn quickly enough, but to put things simply, I didn't join this course to end up in some marketing/PR/event management department of an office. I don't mind actually doing it, but I just didn't join this course for this.

- TV Production
- Video Production
- Radio Programming/Production
- Radio Journalism
- Print Journalism
- Multimedia
- Web Design
- Marketing and Promotions
- Public Relations/Corporate Communications
- Events Management

Video production is out, because I'm horribly useless with FCP (Final Cut Pro, the software we use for video editing).

- TV Production
- Video Production
- Radio Programming/Production
- Radio Journalism
- Print Journalism
- Multimedia
- Web Design
- Marketing and Promotions
- Public Relations/Corporate Communications
- Events Management

And TV Production means more FCP.

Since there's no broadcast option (which is pretty obvious since they're definitely not gonna put us on air for only 6 months), I have to choose between radio and print journalism.

I don't think I'm particularly good at either area (I'm not being modest, I just really don't feel it), but my friends (and tutor) told me last year that I was good in print journalism (that was when we had our print journo modules), and now that we've got radio modules, my friends (and tutor) are telling me that I'm good in radio. And I agree with neither opinion.

I'm told that I'm good at print and radio, but I don't feel it. I don't have that self-assuredness that yes, I am indeed good in one of these areas. I'm told that I'm good with print journo, but every time I write an article or interview people for an article, I get the feeling that I'm only doing an amateurish job, and that someone else, anyone else, would do a better job. Plus one of our seniors had his SIP with one of the print companies (I think he's pretty cool) and I really don't think I'm anywhere near his level. I'm mada mada dane indeed!

I'm also told that I'm good with radio, but I can't actually hear myself when I'm speaking into the microphone. I don't know how I sound. And all I can focus on is how hard I'm trembling every time I have to go up to the radio console to speak. It's like I'm running on autopilot mode while I'm falling to pieces on air. And for some reason, people find my autopilot mode good. It's like I walk back to the waiting room where my classmates are gathered, listening to whoever's gone up to the console to practice their skills, and I'm shaking so badly because I was so nervous from using the radio console, and I actually have people turning to me and going: "OMG Nat you did great! That was awesome!" I just can't hear myself, and even then...

But according to my friend (who's like a brother to me, he's like my nii-san), both he and my tutor think that I'm suited for radio. And I don't know if he knows it, but his opinion is pretty important to me, especially with stuff like this because he's so much more experienced with these things and he's really got the raw talent for media. Which leaves people like me in awe and slightly wistful, wishing that we could be as good as them. So since he says that I'm better suited for radio... Should I take it? Because I don't deny that radio is really fun - I just need to get over this "stage" fright that I've got.

Newspaper?
Print Journalism?

Or Radio Journalism?

I don't even know what my "strengths" are.
Or if I even have them.

  1. Just think about which one you could see yourself doing. If you sign on for radio, could you see yourself feeling all jittery for 6 months, day in day out? Or even for the rest of your life? I think if you're torn between the two, choose which one you are more comfortable in doing. If you are a skilled mechanic but are afraid of dealing with machines, I doubt you could live with yourself as a mechanic for very long without coming to hate yourself. I honestly think you'd do well in either place, so the question now is which one is a more comfortable fit for you. Either way, I believe you'll do yourself justice. Especially in print, I honestly love reading your posts, so I can vouch for you in print at least :)

    2. All the best to you, my dear. You have a bright future ahead of you in either case, I can see that much. Don't despair :)
