Singaporean - Yes/No?

Let's get this straight. I AM Singaporean. No matter how I speak (I have people telling me that listening to me trying to speak Singlish is actually painful) or act, I am still Singaporean.

It amuses me when people go all "Oh my god, you don't eat xxx or yyy, are you sure you're Singaporean?" I just laugh and offer to show them my birth certificate, or say that nope, I'm not Singaporean at all. I don't usually mind cos it's usually my friends who tease me about it, cos they know that I'm cool with it.

However, there are times (like tonight) when I've had a pretty bad day and am not in the mood to tolerate such fuckery, especially by my asshole of a father.

Let's clear this up, okay?
Here are some of the common local dishes that I don't like.

1. Satay
I cannot stand satay. I hate how it tastes, I hate how the fat sticks to the back of my throat, and thinking about it now just makes me feel nauseous.

2. Ice Kachang
I'll admit it, I eat this only for the ice.
The rest I can't be bothered with, which also means that I don't eat the following:

3. Chendol
I don't really not eat it, I'm just not fond of it.

4. Cheng Tng
I kid you not, I find this quite disgusting.

5. Durians
Jeng jeng jeng!
The biggest debate of all.
Just to clarify matters, I don't think durians smell bad, I actually like the smell.
I just don't like the fruit. I'm quite partial to durian cakes and puffs, but I don't eat the fruit.

There may be other local foods that I don't eat, but this is all I can think of for now. Well, what do you think? Am I Singaporean or not?

Leave your comment below, or name some foods if you will (local, please - don't put some obscure-sounding food like bouillabaisse, because all I'll say to that is "bless you!"), and I'll tell you if I like them or not!

But seriously, I am Singaporean. I don't really care what you think, because I've been asked this question so many times (along with the common "are you really Chinese?" and "are you from overseas or something?") that I don't really care. The only reason why I'm posting all this is because, as I said, my father pissed me off with this question today, and I needed a bit of a good rant.

So let me know: Do you think I'm Singaporean or not? Hell, do you consider yourself Singaporean or not? Leave your comments! :)

  1. Personally I love satay, but hate the rest of those above-mentioned dishes. I speak with a western accent and cannot stand the smell and taste of durians. Am I any less Singaporean for it? No. I have as much right to call this place my home as any of you. Am I different from you? Yes. Am I more westernized? Yes, I am. Does that mean I have any less claim to this place as my home? No. If anyone likes to think any different, they can go wave their little red and white flag and sing the national anthem while they sort out their narrow-sighted little minds. I don't mind that people think I am foreign, I can't blame them because of the way I act and speak. But for them to say I am less Singaporean because of it? That is not only insulting, but very small-minded. I have roots from all across the world, but I was born in THIS country, I call THIS country home and I am soon going to defend it. I was educated here, I grew up here. My dear, you have just as much a reason to call this place home as I do. If you call this place home, if you spent your childhood here, if you have good memories here, you are Singaporean. You were born and raised here. That should be enough.

  2. How does the people who said that you're not Singaporean define Singaporean anyway? Lotta slangs with a hint of a Beng/Lian accent? Lovin' all local food? I thought your fluent English says it all;a true blue Singaporean.
Personally I hate all the food you mentioned except for Chendol.
