BMR Definitions

RQ = A question exploring the r/s between 2 or more communication concepts.

Hypothesis = A declarative statement suggesting a predicted r/s between 2 or more communication concepts.

Constructs = Things/Concepts that the research is interested in examining for a potential r/s.

Conceptual Definition = Definition of terms in the problem statement.

Operational Definition = Indicators that are real and fit the concept.

Independent Variable = Variable that is expected to influence a change in another variable.

Dependent Variable = Variable that is expected to change as a result of the actions of the independent variable.

Intervening/Confounding Variable(s) = Any other variable(s) that may influence the r/s between the independent and dependent variable.

Conceptual Fit = Measuring what you set out to test.

Reality/Ecological Isomorphism = How consistent the operational definition is with the way the constructs exist in the real world.

Linkages = Terms that specify the direction/form of the r/s expected between or among constructs.

Lit Review = Classification/Examination of what accredited scholars and researchers have written on a topic.

Reliability = Consistency with which a measurement yields consistent results.

Validity = Whether a measurement measures what it is supposed to.

Test-Retest = A measurement instrument is administered 2 or more times to the same group.

Sensitisation = Respondents remembering answers given earlier.

Maturation = Respondents have changed in some way in between measurements.

Parallel Forms = 2 separate but parallel measures are administered to a set of respondents.

Split-Half = A single measurement instrument is created using 2 or more parallel items for each construct mapped out.

Intercoder Reliability = 2 or more observers are trained in the use of the measurement scheme and assigned to observe/map the same events.

Sampling = Selection of the things/people to study so that the results will be generalised.

Universe = A group of nonhuman elements with particular characteristics of interest.

Population = A group of people with particular characteristics of interest.

Sample = A subset of the population/universe thought to represent the entire population.

Universe --> Population --> Sample

Sampling Error = The degree to which a sample's parameters differ from the parameters of the population/universe from which it was selected.

Literal Replication = Exact replication.

General Replication = Same research problem, altered procedures.

Triangulation = Same problem, different methodology.

Census = Count of the total number of elements in the universe/population.

Placebo = A treatment that appears to have the same effect as the "real" (actual) treatment, but only works psychologically.
OR
Placebo = A dummy treatment that is administered to the study as though it were the actual treatment.

Coders = Individuals trained to evaluate/categorise each unit of analysis.

Naturalistic Observation = Overt/Covert observation and recording of individual behaviours as they engage in everyday activities.

Sustained Observation = Observing the participant for so long that he/she becomes acclimated to the researcher's presence and once again behaves normally.

One-Tailed = Specifies direction of r/s.

Two-Tailed = No specification of direction of r/s.

Lab Setting = Research conducted in the lab. (High control, Low ecological isomorphism)

Field Setting = Naturally-occurring research setting. (Low control, High ecological isomorphism)

Table shared by Jo and I today during the study session - littered with notes, stationery, QOO and coffee.

Hui Min and Dayna's table. Don't be fooled by the distance - it's equally messy.

Just me admiring the sky on my way home after the study session.

For the last time, BMR: Get a freaking life.
Because you really suck.
